Helen Vincent and Victoria Armstrong
Entrance Gallery, SQUARE EDGE ARTS CENTRE
Helen Vincent
I am based in Palmerston North. Throughout my life, I have moved a lot, and I struggle with my sense of identity wherever I live.
Hence, I mainly use paper in my mixed media art, as I often feel out of place and pasted into a scenery. My work reflects aspects of myself, as my characters are quirky and do not blend into the background.
One day, I want to be like my characters—unapologetically confident. My inspirations for my works come from my travel experiences and day-to-day life.
These works are part of the By The Waters series. When I stand by the waters, I feel connected to the world as water transcends boundaries. I feel less isolated and understand that I am just one small part of this expansive world. I see my objects on this series as beings who carry these understandings without needing to be reminded.
Victoria Armstrong
Victoria Armstrong is an analogue collage artist working under the name Screaming Monkeys. Using imagery hand-cut from magazines and books, their practice is influenced by graphic design, surrealism, and visual storytelling. Through collage, Armstrong explores the idea of constructing alternate realities and layered narratives. At first glance, the works may appear cohesive or familiar, before revealing unexpected details and hidden imagery on closer inspection.
Alongside their studio practice, Armstrong creates zines and runs accessible collage workshops that encourage experimentation, creativity, and connection through making. Their workshops aim to create welcoming spaces where people can play, explore ideas freely, and engage with collage as both an artistic and expressive medium.
