Gunhild Litwin, Maker
display cases, SQUARE EDGE ARTS CENTRE
Born into a family of makers, Gunhild learned to knit, sew, paint and tinker from an early age. Her works embrace European traditional crafts, but infuse them with the playful spirit of Dada, Surrealism, Bauhaus, and Mid-Century Modern. After some years in the US, she now makes a full time home in New Zealand and happily fuses old art&craft with new as well as traditional influences from the cultures she’s lived in.
Her works conjure ‘alternate’ worlds: whimsical objects, assemblages, and fabric art. Gunhild allows materials to guide her creations. She adores colour and embraces visual absurdities, joyfully blurring the lines between art and craft.
The exhibition ‘The Many Faces of a Creative Crone’ showcases a small part of the techniques and media Gunhild uses to explore and express her creative ideas. It also references her age, accumulated experience and growing impatience with the craft/art dichotomy. But don’t let the ‘crone’ scare you off: her works express her intention that her art and craft should spread joy and happiness!
