NGĀTAHI

Rīhari & Mark Warnock

He uri māua nō Ngāti Manu, Te Mahurehure, Ngāpuhi, Pākehā.

Rīhari Warnock’s work explores the feeling of moving through the ngahere at night, knowing there are birds and creatures in the shadows, shifting currents of awa below, and the intricate textures of bark. Rīhari’s early art practice was developed under the guidance of his Nan and father, and shaped through moko, tattooing, and te reo Māori.

Mark Warnock has spent 50 years developing as a mixed media artist. Through sculpture, Mark connects with his whakapapa and te ao Māori. His respect for the taonga materials and species he works with is reflected in his commitment to craftsmanship. Being the first time his work has been on exhibition, Ngātahi is a significant event for Mark, made more so by being alongside his son, Rīhari.

By bringing Rīhari and Mark’s work together, Ngātahi reflects their shared experience of connecting to their whakapapa through their individual art practices.
