Print Making to Nourish | Kate Sione

My work is inspired by the Pacific Islands. I have always loved the lush, tropical landscape of the islands and a lot of my prints reference the botanical plants of the Pacific. All the images in this exhibition is sourced from our trips back to Samoa and also Fiji when we did a stopover trip there. This exhibition considers the importance of food in Samoan culture; it represents bringing agia (family) together as well as preserving and growing food from the Pacific. Being New Zealand European and married to a Samoan  I have had to embrace Pasifika culture and learn about traditional customs and language. My husband and I see it as a priority to teach our children about embracing who they are by them knowing the importance of one’s connection to Christianity, family, language and culture.
