Music and Art were shared passions for Basil Register and his son Jack Register,(my Grandfather and Father).
Basil and Jack were used to playing music to an audience together as both played the bugle and trumpet for many years in bands. Art was also exhibited ,harmoniously, together, in their own separate styles. They were definately in sync. with one another.
Music was played in both studios as they said it helped them paint. Although the music coming from their individual studios in Palmerston North may have differed, it had one thing in common, it was was played loudly!
Travelling to local spots, through out New Zealand and overseas was something both artists enjoyed doing. Sketchbooks and cameras recording moments in time for future paintings.
Painting on site (Plein air), was an enjoyable way of painting for Basil and Jack who both usually painted alone. Jack was not always alone while out and about painting, as he liked to chat, and often sold his paintings still wet, straight off his easel to passers by.
Basil and Jack suppported each other as artists by sharing knowledge, information, resources and opportunities.
They encouraged each other and always showed an interest in each others work.
In selecting these Estate paintings for this exhibition I found myself looking at the landscape a little differently,in a brighter, clearer light.
I can see Basil’s delicately shaped trees moving in the wind, the light sparkling on moving water, Jack’s deeply layered landscapes, and his rythmical lines in the sand and sea.
I see a little of their ‘magic’ as they both called it, and I see the beauty in their melodies composed in pastel and paint.
And as Jack’s clouds skim above the Ruahine Ranges, I am home.
