Carving is part of Michael Angelo’s Ngāti Wharekōkowai, Ngāti Kahungunu and Tūhoe whakapapa. Although he had never tried carving before, an invitation for Tony Kāpua at Papaioru Marae in 1999 demonstrated his natual ability and led to 6 months training with Tūhoe Tauta at Mihiroa Marae. His carving style is unique, unplanned, and comes from his soul, guided by the spirits of nature.
